transitive

A transitive verb is one that has a DO.  An intransitive verb does not have a DO.  This object can be a noun, a noun phrase (gerund), or a noun clause.

Joe built a house.
Joe loves running marathonsIn this case, a phrase (gerund) is the object of the verb..
Joe decided that it was time to trim the hedgeIn this case, a clause is functioning as the object of the verb..

A verb with no object is intransitive.

Joe ran around the block.

Notice the verb “ran” has no object. Note: “block” is the object of the preposition “around”, not the verb “ran”.

Jeb hit with such power that noone dared to face him.

The verb “hit” is intransitive; there is no object.
